Sustainability Policy

Our Commitments to Environmental, Social, and Economic Respo

The Expedition Audacity Research Foundation (E.A.R.) is committed to conducting its work in ways that protect ecosystems, respect communities, and support long-term viability. This Sustainability Policy outlines our approach to environmental, social, and economic sustainability as they relate to our operations, expeditions, collaborations, and programmes.

This policy applies across the foundation’s activities, including field research, vessel operations, community engagement, and educational programmes.

OUR SUSTAINABILITY PRINCIPLES

Environmental Stewardship

Environmental Stewardship

Environmental Stewardship

We work to minimise environmental impact by:

  • Reducing reliance on fossil fuels in expedition operations
  • Prioritising energy efficiency and environmentally responsible logistics
  • Minimising waste and preventing pollution in field operations
  • Conducting research methods that reduce disturbance to ecosystems

Social Responsibility

Environmental Stewardship

Environmental Stewardship

We prioritise people and cultures by:

  • Embedding Indigenous knowledge and consent in research planning
  • Maintaining ethical storytelling and documentation standards
  • Providing accessible education and outreach to under-represented communities
  • Respecting cultural protocols and shared authorship

Economic Sustainability

Environmental Stewardship

Economic Sustainability

 We support long-term wellbeing by:

  • Engaging in ethical procurement and fair compensation practices
  • Prioritising partnerships that strengthen local economic resilience
  • Evaluating tools and technology for long-term viability

These principles guide decision-making and are reflected in our operational practices.

Environmental Practices

E.A.R. integrates environmental sustainability into expedition planning and execution by:

  • Fuel & Energy: Where operationally safe, we use wind propulsion and energy-efficient systems aboard our vessels to reduce carbon intensity.
  • Waste Management: Field and vessel operations strive for minimal waste, including onboard recycling and responsible material handling.
  • Impact-Aware Data Collection: Research methods are selected to minimise physical footprint on ecosystems.
  • Monitoring: We document key environmental indicators (e.g., noise, turbidity, wildlife disturbance) with the intent of refining practices over time.

Commitment
We plan to assess our environmental footprint annually and publish a sustainability snapshot with key performance indicators (KPIs) relevant to expedition operations and field activities.

Social Sustainability in Practice

How We Work With Communities, Not Around Them

E.A.R. integrates social responsibility into all aspects of its work, recognising that environmental research and documentation directly affect people, cultures, and communities.

How We Work

Our social sustainability practices include:

Consent & Collaboration
We prioritise free, prior, and informed consent with Indigenous and local partners before research, documentation, or engagement begins.

Ethical Storytelling
We adhere to documentation standards that respect dignity, cultural context, and community narratives, avoiding sensationalism or extractive storytelling.

Inclusive Education
Our educational programmes are designed to be accessible, culturally respectful, and responsive to diverse learning environments and community needs.

Community Benefit
We aim for outcomes that deliver reciprocal value, ensuring communities are not sources of data or stories without meaningful return.

How We Hold Ourselves Accountable

To ensure these practices remain active and credible, E.A.R. commits to:

  • Co-developing engagement guidelines with community partners
  • Reviewing social practices regularly using partner feedback
  • Documenting consent and collaboration processes as part of project planning
  • Updating approaches over time to reflect evolving ethical standards

These commitments guide decision-making across expeditions, education programmes, and partnerships.

SUSTAINABILITY & RESPONSIBLE PROCUREMENT

MEASUREMENT & REPORTING

MEASUREMENT & REPORTING

Economic Practices

To support economic sustainability:

  • We engage with local suppliers and service providers where feasible.
  • Procurement decisions consider long-term durability and ecosystem impact.
  • We structure partnerships and contracts to strengthen local capacity.

Commitment
E.A.R. will document procurement standards and review them annually to improve economic outcomes for partner communities.

MEASUREMENT & REPORTING

MEASUREMENT & REPORTING

MEASUREMENT & REPORTING

How We Track Sustainability

Sustainability is measured through:

  • Annual internal assessment of environmental and social indicators
  • Partner feedback and review processes
  • Documentation of lessons learned to improve future practice

We intend to publish a simple sustainability summary each year, alongside or integrated with our Financials & Transparency reports.

Policy Scope & Updates

This Sustainability Policy applies to all E.A.R. programmes and operations. It will be reviewed annually by the foundation leadership and updated as necessary to reflect evolving best practices, community collaboration insights, and operational experience.
