What We’re Studying

Research Shaped by Each Region

As the vessel moves south, the questions aboard will change with the waters around us.

Projects may examine wildlife, plankton, ocean conditions, the seafloor, technology and the relationships between people and the marine environments they depend on.

Follow the Water • Follow the Questions

Across Ecosystems

Tropical, temperate and southern waters create very different conditions for research.

Across Disciplines

Marine science, technology, anthropology and community-based research can all find a place aboard.

Across the Voyage

Some questions continue south with us, while others belong to a particular region or chapter.

 Where Pressure Becomes Visible

Industry on the Water

Following the Human Footprint

The eastern Pacific supports fishing, shipping and coastal economies across thousands of kilometres, but that activity can also place enormous pressure on marine environments.

Along the route, researchers may document vessel activity, pollution, resource use and the places where industrial demand begins to collide with ecological limits.

Observe the Activity • Understand the Impact

Following More Than the Vessels

Fishing in the Shadows

From Activity at Sea to the Money Behind It

Throughout The Long Way South, the Red Quill Society will work to identify vessels hiding their movements, ownership or fishing activity across the eastern Pacific.

The investigation will look beyond where those vessels operate to ask who finances them, where illegally caught seafood enters the supply chain and who ultimately profits from it.

Find the Vessel • Follow the Money

From the Field

Stories From the Long Way South

As the vessel moves south, this space will grow with research updates, wildlife encounters, community stories and the discoveries that only become possible once the work begins.

Some moments will follow the plan. Others will arrive without warning and change what we thought the next chapter would be.

Follow the Route • See What We Find

Research Updates

Follow the projects, observations and fieldwork happening aboard.

People and Places

Meet the communities, collaborators and crew shaping each chapter.

Unexpected Moments

See the discoveries, setbacks and surprises no itinerary can predict.
