Education, Access, and Discovery at the Frontlines of Change

Expedition Luminescence connects students directly to live ocean research, expedition fieldwork, and environmental discovery — particularly where geography, health, or resources limit access to traditional science experiences.
Through structured digital engagement, curriculum-aligned resources, and real expedition insight, the programme helps build scientific literacy, environmental understanding, and future ocean stewardship at global scale.
Expedition Luminescence brings the realities of field science into classrooms through a structured and repeatable engagement model.
Participating classrooms receive access to:
Content is designed to complement existing science and environmental curricula while expanding student exposure to real-world research environments.

This isn’t outreach.
It’s an opening.
Expedition Luminescence is structured to support sustained curiosity, scientific confidence, and environmental literacy over time — not just one-off engagement moments.
By maintaining regular contact between classrooms and active field research, the programme helps students build a deeper understanding of ocean systems, scientific practice, and real-world environmental change.
A closer connection to the mission.
The E.L. Cohort brings together a small group of classrooms that engage directly with the expedition team through live calls, weekly check-ins, and collaborative projects.
For Expedition 1, the Cohort will include approximately 25–35 students (typically grades 4–6), selected with an emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and global representation.
Cohort classrooms receive:
Flexible access for classrooms everywhere.
Lumi Learners engage on their own schedule with access to:
No deadlines.
No pressure.
Just rich, accessible content — ready when you are.

Expedition Luminescence is provided at no cost to participating classrooms.
No school, educator, hospital programme, or learning community is charged to participate.
The programme is designed to ensure that meaningful science access does not depend on geography, institutional funding, or physical mobility.
Priority outreach includes:

Expedition Luminescence follows a structured weekly cadence designed to maintain continuity between classrooms and expedition activity.
Weekly Waves of Discovery may include:
This consistent rhythm allows classrooms to follow real expeditions as they unfold, reinforcing continuity rather than one-time exposure.

Expedition Luminescence integrates a STEAM+ approach that connects ocean science with broader learning domains.
Programme materials support:
This interdisciplinary structure helps students see ocean science as a living, connected system rather than an isolated subject.

What Students Experience
Every participating classroom gains access to learning experiences rooted in discovery, including:
Students aren’t just watching an expedition — they’re part of it.

Accessible by Design — No Cost. No Barriers.
Participation in Expedition Luminescence is entirely free.
No classroom — regardless of size, location, or structure — will ever pay to take part.
Opportunity should never depend on a school budget, a postal code, or a family’s means.
Expedition Luminescence was created to open doors that geography, circumstance, or health too often keep closed.
Not every student can stand on the deck of a research vessel. But every student should have the opportunity to see how science unfolds in the real world — to witness discovery, ask questions, and understand that the ocean is not distant or abstract, but part of a living system that connects us all.
If Luminescence helps even one student realise that science is something they can step into — not just read about — then it is doing exactly what it was built to do.

Expedition Luminescence is delivered in partnership with Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants, who facilitate live and recorded educational broadcasts connecting expeditions directly with classrooms around the world.

Wherever possible, learning materials honour local voices and perspectives. Curriculum translations are available upon request, including:
