R/V Audacity

Ocean Research Platform for Science, Education, and Ethical

WHAT R/V AUDACITY IS

R/V Audacity is the Expedition Audacity Research Foundation’s flagship ocean research vessel — configured to support long-range multidisciplinary science, ethical documentation, community collaboration, and experiential education in remote and challenging waters.

She combines robust seagoing capability with purpose-adapted research infrastructure, enabling work that would otherwise be difficult or impractical from shore-based facilities or short-term chartered platforms.

WHAT R/V AUDACITY DOES

R/V Audacity serves several mission-critical roles:

Mobile Research Platform

Documentation & Storytelling

Mobile Research Platform

Configured with wet and dry lab spaces for chemical, biological, and molecular sample handling, processing, and preparation, supporting safe workflow separation, contamination control, and reliable sample preservation during extended field operations.

Biodiversity Monitoring

Documentation & Storytelling

Mobile Research Platform

Supports non-invasive environmental DNA (eDNA) collection to map marine species presence and ecosystem health. Environmental RNA (eRNA) samples are collected onboard and preserved for later laboratory processing ashore.

Documentation & Storytelling

Documentation & Storytelling

Documentation & Storytelling

Provides platforms for ethical film, photography, and data gathering in support of environmental accountability and public understanding, with workflows designed to respect consent, context, and the integrity of both people and place.

Education & Mentorship

Documentation & Storytelling

Functions as a virtual classroom at sea for Expedition Luminescence, connecting school groups worldwide through live links and expedition content. Students do not sail onboard, except for limited educational tours while in port.

Accessible Research Residencies

Early-career researchers are welcomed aboard for residencies, where they are supported to pursue independent research projects using onboard equipment. Housing, meals, and access to vessel resources are provided at no cost.

Partner Collaboration

Hosts scientists, local experts, educators, and community representatives as part of collaborative research and documentation efforts, creating shared working environments that support respectful exchange, co-learning, and informed decision-making.

CAPABILITIES & DESIGN

Built for Remote and Challenging Waters

R/V Audacity is configured to support missions that traditional platforms cannot reliably accommodate.

Scientific Capabilities

  • Wet and dry lab spaces for sample handling and preparation
  • eDNA collection and processing stations
  • eRNA collection and preservation for off-vessel analysis
  • Long-range sampling systems (CTD, nets, pumps)
  • Acoustic and environmental sensor deployment

Operational Features

  • Extended autonomy for multi-week voyages
  • Modular workstations adaptable to changing research needs
  • Communications systems for data transmission and live classroom links
  • SCUBA and ROV deployment capability

Sustainability Focus

  • Primarily sail-based propulsion
  • Solar and wind assist where feasible
  • Systems designed to minimise operational footprint and onboard waste

ADVANCING EAR’S MISSION

Why R/V Audacity Matters

In an era where oceans are changing faster than they can be consistently studied, R/V Audacity brings science directly to the frontlines.

She enables the foundation to:

  • Address data gaps in regions with limited monitoring
  • Build community partnerships rooted in consent and shared priorities
  • Deliver real-time educational impact to classrooms worldwide
  • Support ethical documentation that stands up to scrutiny

Audacity does not study the ocean from afar — she places people, tools, and attention where evidence is still being gathered.
