Remembering Captain Don Walsh
In the history of ocean exploration, Captain Don Walsh is widely recognised for his work beneath the sea. His passing in 2023 marked the close of a long career devoted to advancing ocean knowledge.
Expedition Audacity remembers Captain Walsh as our first Advisor. He offered thoughtful guidance during the foundation’s early development and helped shape the direction of several initial projects.
Born in 1931, Captain Walsh began his career in the United States Navy, where his interest in the ocean took root. In 1960, he and Jacques Piccard descended into the Mariana Trench aboard the bathyscaphe Trieste, reaching a depth of more than 35,000 feet and opening new understanding of the deep ocean.
In the decades that followed, he remained active in oceanographic work through research, education, and public engagement, supporting continued attention to the ocean’s role in the global system.
Captain Walsh’s influence continues through the many people and programmes connected to his work.
Fair winds and following seas, Captain Don Walsh.
