How Citizen Science Crew Contribute
Citizen Science roles are organised across observation, documentation, storytelling, and operational assistance. Participants may contribute in one area or move between roles as projects evolve.
All roles operate within supervised expedition structures and support ongoing research and vessel activity.
Field Data Collection
- assist with eDNA/eRNA sampling under supervision
- record environmental conditions and metadata
- support sensor deployment and retrieval
Sample Processing & Documentation
- log and preserve samples for analysis
- assist with wet and dry lab workflows under oversight
- help verify data consistency
Analysis Support & Data Management
- assist with dataset organisation
- support mapping, tagging, and archive workflows
Reporting & Contribution
- contribute to field notes and research summaries
- support ethical documentation under project leads
Citizen science participants work under the direction of Expedition Audacity researchers and crew.
Time Commitment
Opportunities vary by project and season, from short coastal deployments to multi-week voyages.
Training Required
All participants complete orientation covering safety, data protocols, and ethical conduct. Fieldwork is supervised.
Voluntary Participation
These roles are voluntary. When onboard, basic vessel logistics are covered. Travel to and from embarkation points, personal gear, and related expenses remain the responsibility of the participant unless otherwise noted.
Safety
Field and vessel environments require adherence to safety procedures and defined operational limits.
