Three Ways to Contribute to the Work

This is not a leisure experience; it is active participation

The Citizen Science Crew

The Citizen Science Crew programme invites curious, capable, and committed individuals to contribute to real environmental research and documentation as part of Expedition Audacity’s field operations and data projects.

This is not passive observation. It is participation in meaningful scientific work — from data collection and quality control to analysis support and reporting — under the guidance of trained researchers.

Citizen scientists work alongside Expedition Audacity teams, supporting research that contributes to open knowledge, community stewardship, and ethical science.

No prior field research experience is required — training is provided.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Hands-on participation, guided learning, and shared responsibility

How Citizen Science Crew Contribute

Field Data Collection

  • Assisting with eDNA/eRNA sample collection under supervision
  • Recording environmental conditions and metadata
  • Supporting sensor deployment and retrieval

Sample Processing & Documentation

  • Logging and preserving samples for analysis
  • Assisting in wet/dry lab workflows (under trained oversight)
  • Verifying data quality and consistency

Analysis Support & Data Management

  • Helping organise and review datasets
  • Assisting with mapping, tagging, and archive workflows

Reporting & Contribution

  • Helping prepare field notes, contributions to research briefs
  • Supporting ethical documentation under project leads

Citizen science participants always work under the supervision and direction of Expedition Audacity researchers and crew.

EXPECTATIONS & COMMITMENT

Before applying, please understand:

Time Commitment

Citizen Science Crew opportunities vary by project and season — from short coastal deployments to multi-week voyages.

Training Required

All participants complete orientation to safety, data protocols, and ethical conduct. Fieldwork will be supervised.

Voluntary Participation

These roles are voluntary. Participants are not compensated. Expedition Audacity covers basic logistics when onboard, but travel to/from embarkation points, gear, and personal expenses are the responsibility of the participant unless otherwise indicated.

Safety

Field and vessel environments can be demanding. Participants must be able to follow safety protocols and work within specified physical and operational limits.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Citizen Science Crew members help expand what’s possible in environmental research — turning dedicated curiosity into documented evidence and shared knowledge.

Your contributions support data gaps, strengthen collaborative science, and help make research more inclusive and impactful.

This is work that matters; this is participation that counts.
