SEAFLOOR MAPPING INITITIVE


Three complementary layers of subsea understanding

The seafloor still holds wide areas that have yet to be carefully documented.

Through the Seafloor Mapping Initiative, Expedition Audacity is preparing to expand its subsea toolkit to include advanced acoustic mapping of the seabed and shallow subsurface.


This programme is in active development. System architecture, vessel integration, and phased procurement planning are underway as we build toward operational readiness.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW


Integrated tools for a clearer view beneath the surface

The Seafloor Mapping Initiative is structured around three complementary layers of subsea understanding. 

Bathymetric Mapping

Sub-Bottom Profiling

Bathymetric Mapping

High-resolution multibeam sonar will generate detailed models of seafloor depth and terrain, supporting habitat assessment, navigation research, and environmental baselining.



Seabed Imaging

Sub-Bottom Profiling

Bathymetric Mapping

Side scan sonar will produce acoustic imagery of the seafloor surface, helping identify texture, debris fields, and habitat features not visible in depth data alone.

Sub-Bottom Profiling

CHIRP sub-bottom systems will examine sediment structure beneath the seabed, supporting geological interpretation and buried feature assessment. 

Together, these tools are intended to provide a more complete view of underwater environments across Expedition Audacity’s operating regions.

Designed for reliable deployment from expedition platforms

The planned system suite is being designed for deployment from our 30-metre expedition vessel. The configuration under development includes:

The focus is on reliability, transportability, and 

performance in remote and lightly charted waters. 

PHASED DEVELOPMENT APPROACH


Staged planning for reliable, expedition-ready capability

Recognising the scale of this capability, Expedition Audacity is following a staged implementation pathway. Current work is focused on:


  • Technical architecture and vendor evaluation
  • Vessel integration planning
  • Deck handling and tow operations design
  • Funding pathway development
     

Procurement and installation will proceed as dedicated programme funding is secured.

WHY THIS MATTERS


Strengthening seafloor understanding through observation

The black is where we still need modern measurements at a reasonable resolution 

In many regions, detailed seafloor information remains limited. Expanding access to high-quality mapping supports:

  • Marine habitat understanding
  • Coastal and shelf monitoring
  • Improved navigation awareness in under-surveyed areas
  • Evidence-informed ocean stewardship  


The Seafloor Mapping Initiative is intended to complement Expedition Audacity’s existing subsea and field programmes by adding a further layer of environmental insight. 

CURRENT STATUS


Programme development and integration planning underway

This initiative remains in development. Equipment has not yet been procured and operational deployments have not begun. Updates will be shared as the programme advances through funding, acquisition, and sea trials.
